“Quarantine Changed Me”

This animated short reflects on how the isolation of quarantine led to a powerful personal transformation—letting go of toxic friendships, embracing self-prioritization, and learning not to waste energy on things beyond one’s control. From high school struggles to newfound confidence in college and abroad in Japan, it’s a story about growth, self-expression, and making the most of the energy we have while we’re young.

Quarantine gave me the time and space to realize various life lessons such as friendships, prioritizing oneself, and not wasting time on things you can’t control. We, as young adults, only have so much time with the energy we have now, so we shouldn’t waste it on trivial matters and other’s opinions, we should focus on enjoying the time we have.

As high school freshmen, we were all still as self-conscious as middle school, just now in a larger environment. My friend group at the time never understood my feelings or interests, and were very judgmental. Though I already had a phase of trying to “fit in”, those feelings still remained as I was still discontent with myself. I spent so much time thinking “why” that I grew to only focus on the negative and wouldn’t allow myself to enjoy anything.　

Quarantine challenged everyone on where they actually wanted to put their energy towards. I discovered that I wasn’t one of those things to my old friends. So, I started thinking to myself, “Why am I wasting energy on people who are so toxic? Why not just leave?”. So I did.

I learned to keep boundaries and focus on myself. This freed up time to talk with people who resonate with me more– my friends now. They helped fuel my creativity because we all experimented with styles like our hair, clothes, and makeup. From this change, I learned to juggle school, my own small business, and my first job. Since then, I have been able to express myself more and realized the positives of prioritizing yourself. Not only was I happy with myself, but I attracted people like me as friends.　

After highschool, I had a new mindset to never let anyone else feel judged like I was. With my new gain in confidence, I put energy into my ideas and I gained a liking to socialize with others. I learned to keep my energy to those who reciprocate it, and towards my own goals. Since I strived at Drexel during my first-year, I challenged myself to do the same in Japan. My lingering self-consciousness gave me SO much anxiety. I thought to myself, “will they like me?”, “what if I make a mistake?” thinking the world would end. At the end of the day, I couldn’t predict the unpredictable.

Now, I’ve enjoyed so much in Japan, from new friends, new places, and new opportunities. The language barrier and cultural differences have been discouraging, but I will keep trying.

After all, when’s the next time I’ll be across the globe?

隔離は私に、友情、自分自身を優先すること、コントロールできないことに時間を無駄にしないことなど、さまざまな人生の教訓を理解するための時間と空間を与えてくれました。　私たち若者は、今自分が持っているエネルギーでは限られた時間しか持っていないので、つまらないことや他人の意見に時間を無駄にすべきではなく、与えられた時間を楽しむことに集中すべきです。　高校一年生の私たちは、まだ中学生の頃と同じように自意識を持っていて、より大きな環境に身を置いたばかりでした。当時の私の友人グループは私の気持ちや興味をまったく理解せず、非に批判的でした。　すでに「馴染もうとする」段階はあったものの、自分自身に不満を抱えていたため、その感情はまだ残っていた。 「なぜ」を考えることに多くの時間を費やしてきたため、ネガティブな面ばかりに注目してしまい、何も楽しむことができなくなりました。　

隔離により、実際にどこにエネルギーを注ぎたいのかということが全員に問われました。私は、昔からの友人たちにとって、自分がそのような人物ではないことに気づきました。それで、自分自身にこう考え始めました。「なぜこんなに有害な人たちにエネルギーを無駄にしているのだろう？」なぜただ去らないのですか？それでそうしました。私は境界線を保ち、自分自身に集中することを学びました。これにより、私にもっと共鳴してくれる人々、つまり今では友人たちと話す時間が解されました。私たち全員が髪、服、化粧などのスタイルを試したので、それらは私の創造性を刺激するのに役立ちました。この変化から、私は学校、自分自身の中小企業、そして最初の仕事を両立させることを学びました。それ以来、私はもっと自分を表現できるようになり、自分を優先することの良い点に気づきました。私は自分自身に満足していただけでなく、同じような人たちを友達として引き寄せました。

高校を卒業した後、私は他の人に自分と同じように評価されていると感じさせてはいけないという新たな考え方を持ちました。新たに自信がついたことで、自分のアイデアにエネルギーを注ぐようになり、他の人と交流することが好きになりました。私は自分のエネルギーを、それに応えてくれる人たちへ、そして自分自身の目標に向かって保ち続けることを学びました。 1年目にドレクセルで頑張ったので、日本でも同じように挑戦してみました。私の長引く自意識は私に大きな不安を与えました。「彼らは私を好きになってくれるだろうか？」「もし失敗したらどうしよう？」と考えました。世界が終わると思っていました。結局のところ、予測不可能なことは予測できませんでした。

今、新しい友達、場所、機会など、日本でとても楽しんでいます。言語の壁や文化の違いに落胆することもありますが、これからも頑張っていきたいと思います。結局のところ、次に地球を渡るのはいつになるでしょうか？

In our end-of-program art exhibition, I featured a mock-up ticket of a Kikuo concert, three posters based on children’s books I read in the library for practicing Japanese, and two posters of Tamagawa’s annual music concert: Coalescence (2024).

3D Printing: Banana Cat

For our 3D printing final, we were tasked to create something using skills we’ve learned on Fusion 360 with the help of Creality Print. My idea was to create something I could utilize in Akihabara, with one of my biggest issues being: holding my 100 yen coins at arcades/game stations. I combined my love for gachapon and coin purses to make a figure coin bank, in a sense. With the idea of potential things like customizable faces and characters, these figures would be able to hold your coins, become a keychain, or become a regular character stand.
